During the month-long exhibition "Rooms Saturated with Color", the pavilion of France at Expo 2020 Dubai celebrates the idea of kinetic experience within color, the memory of Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz Des, who is one of the fathers of kinetic art in the world.
About this unique experience, Carlos Cruz Jr., who came specifically to Dubai, to attend the opening of his father’s exhibition (1923 - 2019), which settled in France until his departure: “Color saturation research began in Paris in 1965, as man relies on shape to embody color. Like the color of the sky and the color of trees, but the idea of the research is based on the fact that color does not need a form in order to be embodied in it, but rather it needs awareness in order to see it, feel it and touch it as well. Therefore, the experiment is based on placing four different colors in a large square, which is lit by calm white neon colors, on which a filter of the desired color and its intensity is placed. This experiment contains blue, red, green, and then red again.”
Cruz Jr. explained: “To go through the experiment, the person has to stand continuously for a minute or more in the square of the blue color and move inside it, where he will feel then that he is able to touch and feel the color.
Then his mind will gradually begin to lighten the color and turn it to white, then by moving the same person to the red square, he will feel the intensity and strength of this color, and his sense of color will be strong at first, until his eyes get used to it, and the intensity of the color begins to decrease little by little.
He continued: «Then the person moves to the room of the green color, which we find a calm color at first and then increases in strength, and finally the participant returns to the room of the red color again, and although the color is in the same degree that the participant tested previously, he will find it less intense by several degrees of time. Des Jr. pointed out that the colors are fixed, as well as the degree of their strength within each square, but the nature of movement, sensation, and the degree of awareness varies each time.
The experience differs from one person to another according to his culture and his definition of color, and according to his sense and perception.
The color red, for example, is bloody in some cultures, while it is considered royal in others, so everyone's experience will certainly be different.
The exhibition of rooms saturated with colors through kinetic art, which was launched yesterday, continues until January 14, and opens its doors to all visitors to "Expo 2020 Dubai", for a new and distinctive experience in the France Pavilion located in the mobility area.
