Due to technical challenges and the ongoing pandemic, the plant is not expected to reach full operation until 2027 - two years later than previously thought, it will be announced in a press release.

The new design entails additional costs.

According to ESS 'calculations, the bill will increase by around EUR 550 million, corresponding to SEK 5.6 billion.

“We have worked hard to develop a new realistic project plan, in close collaboration with our partners throughout Europe.

We are convinced that we will be able to deliver a world-leading research facility based on the new plan and will take all necessary measures to succeed, ”says Helmut Schober, Director General of ESS.

The first sod for the ESS was taken in 2014 and the plant will have the world's most powerful neutron source when completed.

Sweden and Denmark, the host country of the ESS, but ESS Board consists of 13 members.
