“There must be a legal solution according to the will of the people.” Tunisian President: The 2014 constitution is no longer valid and has no legitimacy

Yesterday, Thursday, Tunisian President Kais Saied said that the way is clear to get out of the exceptional situation in the country, by returning to the people in a different way, as he put it.

Saeed stressed that there must be a legal solution according to the will of the people, as he said.

During his meeting with 3 professors of constitutional law at the Tunisian University at the Carthage Palace, President Said added that his country's crisis lies in the 2014 constitution, "which is no longer valid and has no legitimacy in Tunisia."

Said explained, according to a statement by the Tunisian presidency, "The problem in Tunisia today is the result of the 2014 constitution, which has proven to be no longer valid and cannot continue to be implemented because it has no legitimacy."

Saeed stressed that "the way has become clear, which is to return to the people in a new and completely different way (he did not specify), and there must be a legal solution based on the will and sovereignty of the people," without giving any details.

Earlier on Thursday, Said met with professors of constitutional law at the Tunisian University, Sadiq Belaid, Amin Mahfouz, and Mohamed Saleh Benaissa, to discuss the legality of the 2014 constitution in the country.

Since last July 25, Tunisia has witnessed a severe political crisis as a result of taking exceptional measures, including freezing the work of Parliament, lifting the immunity of its deputies, issuing legislation by presidential decrees, dismissing the prime minister, and forming new ones.

The majority of political forces in the country reject these decisions and consider them a coup against the constitution, while other forces support them and see them as a correction to the course of the 2011 revolution, which overthrew the then president, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

While Qais Saeed, who began in 2019 a 5-year presidential term, says that he did not suspend the work of the constitution, but rather took exceptional measures within the framework of the constitution to protect the state from an imminent danger.

Recently, experts and observers suggested the possibility of the Tunisian president taking a decision to suspend the constitution, which was approved in January 2014.
