Chile joins the 30 countries where same-sex marriage is legal after a historic vote on Tuesday.

"It's hard to believe we're taking this step today," Rolando Jimenez of the LGBTQ rights group Movilh told NBC News.

In Latin America, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Uruguay have already approved the law, according to the Human Rights Campaign.

In Chile, the process began as early as 2007 by then-President Michelle Bachelet.

But the issue has been debated for decades.

"Today is a historic day, our country has taken a step closer to justice through equality and a recognition that love is love," said the country's Minister of Social Affairs Karla Rubilar after the vote.
