Armenia, Azerbaijan urged to stop "racial hatred"

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Tuesday (December 7th) called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to put an end to “

racial hatred

”.

The two countries accuse each other of violating the Racial Discrimination Convention.

The judges have not yet decided the merits of the case, it could take several years.

But in the meantime, the magistrates have pronounced on emergency measures demanded by the two countries ...

It was a very short victory for Armenia against Azerbaijan ... During hearings organized in October, Yerevan had demanded an order obliging Baku to release prisoners of war.

But the judges called on Azerbaijan to protect these prisoners from violence and physical abuse and ensure their access to justice.

The magistrates also ordered Azerbaijan to prevent vandalism and desecration of Armenian cultural heritage. 

For its part, Baku was awaiting an order from the judges forcing Yerevan to hand over the map of the mines laid.

But the issue of mines does not fall under the Racial Discrimination Convention, the judges said, rejecting Azerbaijan's request. 

The Court also noted that the dispute between the two states had not evolved since the ceasefire agreement of November 2020. At the end of November, the two heads of state, Nikol Pachinian and Ilham Aliev had met. met in Sochi under the sponsorship of Vladimir Putin.

Will the case brought before the ICJ weigh?

The two countries exchanged a few prisoners for maps identifying the location of mines.
