The battle for Northvolt's new battery factory is taking place behind closed curtains and it is unclear which cities are still relevant.

At the same time, the first prize is pure gold mine, 2,500 direct jobs, spin-off effects in the form of thousands of new jobs and a substantial increase in value in the housing market is to be expected.

Sundsvall-Timrå is one of those who hope.

- It would mean a lot historically for this region, says Bodil Hansson (S), municipal councilor in Sundsvall.

Many competitors

Sundsvall probably competes with Gothenburg, where Northvolt's partner Volvo has large operations, and probably also with Skövde, Norrköping and Gävle.

Umeå, Borlänge and Östersund as well as Finnish Vaasa and Ghent in Belgium are also places that may be relevant.

Neither Volvo nor Northvolt want to comment on the issue, but say that it is still about more places than those that the media highlights.

Millions invested

It all looks like a lottery with high stakes.

In Skellefteå, which won the battle for Northvolt's first factory, millions of kroner were invested in human resources to get the establishment and then expanded the infrastructure around the factory area for 100 million - despite the fact that Northvolt in that situation was a completely untested card.

The question is how much have the municipalities that are fighting for the new establishment invested in their campaigns?

- It means no financial burden for taxpayers, says Jörgen Edsvik (S), municipal councilor in Gävle municipality.
