04 December 2021 The Next generation EU is "new and unprecedented", a "historic" transition that "only two years ago would have been unthinkable": said the European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni speaking at Med Dialogues, the conference organized by Farnesina and Ispi which closes today in Rome.

Beyond the considerable amount of money made available, "what is important is the framework in which it fits, which foresees a common debt for a common purpose, something that would have been unthinkable two years ago. who spoke of a historical moment, or 'Hamiltonian', or of the Copernican revolution. It is not a question of giving money, but of linking it to commitments and investments, and reforms. We have been asking for these reforms for years, but now we have the firepower to get them. "

"I think the pandemic is still the main challenge" for the economy, because "it creates uncertainty in our society".

But "experience shows us that despite the uncertainty and risks of new variants, the economy has adapted to the pandemic in recent months. Some sectors more linked to direct contacts between people may be more affected, but others, such as manufacturing in Italy, continue to grow. The recovery is there and it is very strong ".
