A couple who tortured and killed their six-year-old son have been found guilty.

Emma Tustin

, 32, stepmother of the minor,

Arthur Labinjo-Hughes

, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder and will have to serve a minimum of 29 years.

The boy's biological father, Thomas Hughes, 29, has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.

The little

boy

had been

poisoned, beaten and deprived of food in the weeks leading up to his death.

"Arthur was subjected to the most unimaginable suffering at the hands of the two of you. You both told lies to hide what was going on in that house.

Your behavior towards him was often spiteful and sometimes sadistic

," Judge

Justice Wall said

while passing sentence in the Coventry County Court.

"This is without a doubt one of the most distressing and disturbing cases I have ever had to deal with."

The couple were found guilty Thursday after an eight-week trial that revealed how

Arthur was subjected to "incomprehensible and increasing cruelty

,

"

prosecutors argued.

He was physically assaulted, poisoned with salt and forced to remain in isolation for up to 14 hours a day in the months leading up to his death.

Wall described Tustin, who refused to go to the dock to hear the sentence, as

a "manipulative woman who would tell any lie and blame anyone to save her own skin

.

"

He said it was a "shocking feature of the case" that Tustin's two sons, ages four and five, "lived perfectly happy and normal lives in that house while this terrible cruelty to Arthur was taking place."

Addressing the father, the magistrate said that he had apparently cared appropriately for Arthur "before falling in love with Tustin to the point of erasing all his love for his son."

Tustin killed Arthur on June 16 last year by violently shaking

him and hitting his head, causing "extensive and devastating" injuries, Wall said. "The amount of violence she used against him produced forces in his body that are said to be equivalent to what might otherwise have been produced by

a high-speed traffic collision."

Tustin poisoned Arthur with salt for several weeks,

giving him a significant amount in the hours leading up to his death

. When he was admitted to the hospital, the sodium levels in his blood were so high that they could not be measured accurately with the hospital equipment, and

130 bruises

were found

on his body

, a number that one medical expert described as "staggering." An investigation was then opened by social services, which failed to detect the abuse that started when Hughes moved into Tustin's home in Solihull with his son during confinement last year. In fact, social workers visited Tustin's home two months before Arthur's death after his grandmother,

Joanne Hughes

, expressed concern about the bruises on the boy's back, but concluded that "there were no safeguard concerns."

The least family said that prior to Tustin's appearance,

Arthur was "the model of a happy

, joyous, loving

six-year-old

" who loved to dress up as superheroes, play cricket and soccer, and "always did. they would remember like this. "
