Blizzard warning on Hawaii Island

A blizzard warning has been issued for the Hawaii Island (Big Island), Hawaii, USA.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Blizzard Alert on the 3rd (local time) that snowfall of up to 1 foot (30.48 cm) is expected in the summit area of the Big Island, CNN broadcasts and others reported.

A blizzard warning with strong winds of up to 100 mph (160.9 km) will remain in effect until 6 a.m. on the 5th.

The warning is in effect for two peaks, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, which are 13,000 feet (3,962 m) above sea level on the Big Island.

This blizzard warning is due to Kona, a seasonal storm that developed west of the island of Hawaii.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that Hawaiian Islanders must stay indoors and travel can be very difficult or impossible as snow can block visibility.

Then, a flood advisory was issued saying that heavy rain is expected due to a Kona storm in the coastal lowlands.

CNN reported, citing the National Weather Service, that as of this morning, only two of the 50 states in the United States have issued a blizzard warning: Alaska and Hawaii.

Snow is not uncommon on Hawaii's Mauna Loa and Mount Maunakea, but it's not uncommon for a blizzard warning to be issued, the Washington Post reported.

It is the first time in three years and six months that a Blizzard warning has been issued in the state of Hawaii.

On the other hand, 48 states in the continental United States are experiencing snow droughts due to mild winters, CNN reported.

As of today, only 6% of the mainland was covered by snow, the lowest level in 20 years.

Denver, Colorado, had 224 days without officially measuring snow, and most of the 48 states had below-average snowfall last month.

The WP reported that "with climate warming, snow may disappear in the western mountains for years."

The American media reported that the mild mainland weather in early December caused a heat dome formed in the western region (a phenomenon that traps hot air by stagnation of upper high pressure), and a phenomenon in which warm air masses from the south moved north instead of being prevented from moving south due to strong arctic oscillations. However, a winter storm advisory has been issued for North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin due to the low pressure that developed over Montana this weekend, the Meteorological Administration predicted that there could be a lot of snow in the area.
