13 killed in an ISIS attack on a village in northern Iraq

An attack by Islamic State militants on a village in northern Iraq on Friday killed at least 13 people, including three villagers and 10 Kurdish soldiers, officials in the semi-autonomous region of Iraq said.

A statement issued by the armed forces of the Kurdistan Region (Peshmerga) said that members of the "ISIS" attacked the village in the early hours of Friday morning, killing three residents.

The statement added that the Peshmerga forces intervened, which led to clashes that resulted in the death of at least seven of its soldiers.

Kurdish security officials and hospitals said the final death toll was at least 10 peshmerga soldiers and three villagers.

The attack took place in Makhmour district, which is a major point of activity for the organization and witnesses regular attacks on Kurdish and Iraqi forces and often civilians.

Makhmour, a mountainous region, is located 70 kilometers southeast of Mosul and 60 kilometers southwest of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region.

Iraqi Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani called for greater security cooperation with the Iraqi security forces to counter ISIS activity.
