Last year, about 25,400 people in the country suffered strokes, which is close to 400 fewer cases than the year before.

In total, around 6,100 people died in stroke last year, about 200 more than in 2019. However, the trend is that the number of deaths is declining.

"Both the number of cases of stroke and the number of deaths have decreased by about 40 percent since 2006. This is partly due to the fact that care has improved on preventive measures, such as drug treatments for high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation or high blood fats," says Anastasia Simi, investigator at the National Board of Health and Welfare, in a press release.

Stroke is when a blockage or bleeding damages the brain.
