The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) published, Thursday, December 2, its report on humanitarian needs in the world for 2022. With the humanitarian crises in Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen or Ethiopia, among others, the organization estimates that it needs at least $ 41 billion to be able to help 183 million people in 2022, an all-time high.

One in 29 people worldwide will need emergency humanitarian assistance in 2022, Ocha estimates.

These needs are 17% higher than last year, an already record year.

Never has the number of people in need of aid "

been so high,

" said Martin Griffiths, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, during a press briefing in Geneva.

Giving help to so many people "

can't last, and yet it has to last,

 " he said.

The organization therefore calculates that it needs at least 41 billion euros to intervene with the most vulnerable people in 63 countries around the world.

At

the forefront is Afghanistan

: The country combines a terrible drought and an economy in free fall since the return of the Taliban to power.

need help.

In addition to conflicts, the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change among the reasons

Apart from conflicts

, the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change are the two main factors impacting populations all over the world.

The pandemic has pushed 20 million more people

into extreme poverty

.

In addition, it has also plunged many health systems into chaos, with a deleterious effect on the fight against other scourges such as HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.

This year, 23 million children were unable to receive basic vaccines.

Global warming and natural disasters of all kinds have displaced millions of people and

raised the specter of famine around the world

.

Over 800 million men and women are already malnourished.

Ocha warns that “

without lasting and immediate action, 2022 could turn out to be catastrophic

 ”.

Yemen and Syria, where the war has been going on for years, also need help, but Ethiopia's needs are particularly acute since the offensive launched by Addis Ababa against Tigray.

This brutal war, which has lasted for more than a year, has caused the displacement of millions of people.

According to the Ocha report, 26 million people depend on humanitarian aid in the Horn of Africa country and 400,000 are on the verge of starvation.

For Martin Griffiths, Ethiopia presents perhaps the "

most worrying situation

", although he hastens to add that there are many other extremely serious situations around the world.
