Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced that the State would take charge of the burial of the 27 migrants who died in the sinking of their boat bound for the United Kingdom in the Channel last Wednesday.

Gérald Darmanin announced on Twitter on Tuesday that the State would take charge of the burial of the 27 migrants who died during the sinking in the Channel of their boat bound for the United Kingdom last Wednesday.

The State "will work with the municipalities which agree to welcome the deceased", added the Minister of the Interior, specifying that it was a request from President Emmanuel Macron.

The State, at the request of the President of the Republic, will take care of the burial of the victims of the shipwreck of November 24.

A drama that revives tensions 

France will not take charge of any repatriation of bodies if the families request it, said Gerald Darmanin's entourage to AFP, stressing that the countries of origin can do so.

This drama, the deadliest to have occurred in the Channel, has rekindled tensions between France and the United Kingdom over the fight against crossings of the "Channel" by illegal immigrants, which have developed since 2018.

Towards a new agreement?

Prime Minister Jean Castex was to write on Tuesday to his counterpart Boris Johnson to suggest that he work on the development of a "balanced agreement" on illegal immigration between his country and the European Union (EU), Gerald announced on Monday.
