A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck northern Peru on Sunday, leaving ten people injured and causing material damage.

It affected the northern jungle as well as a large area adjacent to the central coast, according to the Peruvian National Institute of Geophysics.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 131 km deep and 98 km east of Santa Maria de Nieva, in the department of Amazonas, 860 km northeast of Lima near the border with Ecuador .

The town is located in a sparsely populated area where indigenous people live, on the banks of the Nieva River.

Four hundred earthquakes each year

According to the civil defense, 75 houses were destroyed.

The earthquake also caused damage to infrastructure in Ecuador.

In Peru, the earthquake was felt over half the territory, in the north and the center.

In Lima, the earthquake was felt in several neighborhoods.

The Peruvian capital had already been shaken earlier that morning by another quake of magnitude 5.2.

"The shock was immense," the mayor of the district of Santa Maria de Nieva told

, adding that a few houses made of dried earth and wood had collapsed.

In another district of the department of Amazonas, the 14-meter-high bell tower of a colonial church has collapsed.

Power cuts have been reported in affected areas.

Peru, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is rocked each year by at least 400 noticeable earthquakes.

On August 15, 2007, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake, the epicenter of which was located on the central coast, shook the port of Pisco, killing 595 people.
