After another demonstration against water scarcity in Iran, the police arrested nearly 70 people.

"We have arrested 67 of the main perpetrators and troublemakers," a senior national police representative, General Hassan Karami, told the Fars news agency on Saturday.

"About two to three thousand rioters" took part in the "riots" on Friday.

For more than two weeks, people have been demonstrating in Isfahan again and again out of anger over the drying up of a river that is important for the water supply, the Sayandeh Rud.

The city of Isfahan in the central Iranian province of the same name is the third largest city in the country.

The metropolis with two million inhabitants is a tourist magnet because of its numerous historical sites, including a bridge over the Sayandeh Rud.

However, apart from brief phases, the river has dried up since 2000.

One of the causes of the drought is the persistent drought in Iran.

However, many farmers also blame the diversion of the river water into the neighboring province of Yasd for the problem.

Other provinces in Iran are also suffering from water shortages.

In July of this year there were deadly protests in Khusestan province after the drought caused water shortages.
