"At a time when a partner that is not exactly irrelevant and an ally that is not exactly negligible like Germany seems to change profoundly, I believe it is inevitable that some reflection will also be made in our country, also because that choice will determine reflections that will also affect our country , whether we like it or not, in a single market without borders ". This was stated by the Minister of Labor Andrea Orlando, speaking at the Conference on the diffusion and addiction to drugs underway in Genoa, commenting on the turn towards the legalization of cannabis. "Let's go beyond the hypocrisies, ideologies and stereotypes that are the fundamental prerequisite of that stigma against which we say we want to cooperate," added Orlando.

No war was won with zero tolerance

"There have been many announcements of zero tolerance against addictions, declarations of war, but if the war has not been lost, it certainly has not been won. In recent years there has been a death. per day for overdose "continued the Minister of Labor. "I wish we could go beyond hypocrisy, because it is true that drugs are about young people, but it is not just about young people. It is about vulnerable groups of society, but it is no longer just about them. It is also about the so-called elites, we have to say that. with great clarity. Fragility concerns the heart of our society and has a lot to do with loneliness, 10.2 million Italians will live alone in 2040 ".

I hope the Italian way of fighting drugs disappears

"It is certain that the purely repressive approach against addictions was prejudicial, repulsive and did not take on the frailties, did not try to understand them, it was essentially a collective self-absolution respect to collective bankruptcies. I believe that a broad strategy must be built, involving the family, schools, the social and health system ", added Orlando. "I hope that the conference will put a tombstone on the extravagant temptation to imagine an Italian way to fight drugs, or rather only Italian, the fight against drugs can only be global, the minimum scale is the European one".

Gelmini: on the issue in the Government different sensitivities

"I say clearly that I am part of a thought, of a cultural current, which is not only opposed to any form of legalization of any type of narcotic substance, but I am also convinced that there is no freedom to take drugs but that the action of the state can and should focus only on drug liberation ".

Thus the Minister for Autonomies, Maria Stella Gelmini, who also reiterated that "within the Government there are different sensitivities on this issue".
