The tide of energy

The Element Earth team traveled to the place on the globe where the Atlantic meets the North Sea to discover a strange machine: a 74-meter tidal turbine (the largest in the world) that uses the energy from the tides to produce electricity.

It will be able to supply around 7% of the archipelago's electricity needs this year.

Despite the very high cost of this technology, the Orkney Islands see themselves as the forerunners of the energy revolution in Great Britain.

Too much wind ?

On these islands, the inhabitants pride themselves on producing their own energy.

Some 700 medium-sized wind turbines are installed in the homes of residents and allow many homes to have their own electricity.

A winning system because the excess energy produced is reused.

It is used to produce hydrogen, fuel for cars but also soon for the ferries that connect the island to the mainland.
