So now after all: Cem Özdemir will be a minister in the future federal cabinet.

Besides party chairman Habeck, he is the only man that the Greens put right at the front.

Özdemir's rhetorical talent and his radiance in other milieus do not deny even his harshest critics.

He has proven it many times: Özdemir fills tents and marketplaces, the talk masters invite him, he succeeded in winning his Stuttgart constituency directly and becoming the first vote king in Baden-Württemberg.

For the declared goal of his party to get out of the eco-niche, there could really be no one better than him - which does not mean that the vegetarian Özdemir, who is constantly on the bike, does not see himself as eco.

But as well as the social pedagogue is received outside of the green bubble, some in the party have a hard time with him.

 Heavy headwind

In the past few days, parts of the left wing had protested violently against the plan of the two party leaders to bring Özdemir into the cabinet.

It was also about wing proportion, women's quota and the competitors' fear of loss.

The power struggle was not decided until late Thursday evening, the start of the strike vote on the coalition agreement had to be postponed by one day, and the green party delivered a disastrous picture.

Oberrealo, born in Bad Urach in 1965, was chairman of the Greens for almost ten years, but there was always a certain distance, some find him arrogant. Özdemir did not always take green sensitivities into account. The sentence that you cannot fight Islamists “with a yoga mat under your arm” is something that some people still resent today. When he was fighting for the parliamentary group chairmanship two years ago, so-called party friends suddenly remembered old mistakes, such as his bonus miles.

Özdemir lost the vote and remained chairman of the transport committee.

He never made a secret of the fact that he felt called to something higher.

Agriculture minister was not his dream portfolio, but it would be surprising if Özdemir failed to put the house in the spotlight.

A new interpretation of the department can already be heard from his environment: agriculture is ultimately an economy and a rural area.

Without the “Anatolian Swabian” the Greens would not have lived up to their own demands for diversity.

What has now turned out to be an ace also has another side: the son of a Turkish guest worker lives with police protection because he is constantly threatened by right-wing extremists - because of his clear words to the government in Ankara, but also by Turkish nationalists.
