A new strain of COVID-19 that reflects dozens of mutations has been discovered, The Guardian reported.

Coronaviruses use a spike protein to penetrate cells, and this mutant has 32 mutations in the 'spike protein'.

It was first discovered in Botswana, Africa on the 11th of last month, and has since been confirmed in South Africa and Hong Kong.

South Africa's Ministry of Health officially confirmed the occurrence of the new mutation and said that the mutated virus was selected as the background for the recent surge in confirmed cases.
