Ethiopia civil war, the other war fueled by Facebook
UN investigation concludes that all parties to the conflict in Ethiopia are responsible for war crimes
The rebels in the Tigray region are close to victory
. The scant news from the front lines last week put them 220 kilometers from Addis Ababa. This week, the Tigrian militiamen announced the capture of the strategic Debre Sina, 30 kilometers from the Ethiopian capital,
where the A2 highway takes them directly to the heart of the State
. The civil conflict already leaves thousands of dead and a famine in the making in the most affected areas.
Tigray's military
has been
winning battle after battle
over demoralized and out-run Ethiopian forces
. In a video released two days ago, the Tigrinya filmed a huge number of prisoners in sight of the drone, disciplinedly placed in columns, submissive and prepared to be props for enemy propaganda. In addition, the Tigriña have been joined by rebels from the Oromia region (Oromo Liberation Army). After a lull in the fighting, the war is accelerating and its African neighbors
fear that it will be engulfed in a protracted conflict of catastrophic proportions
.
Meanwhile, in Addis Ababa, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019, says he will lead his army in "an existential war to defend Ethiopia from its destruction" and his press team publishes an archive image
with Ahmed dressed in uniform, with a pistol in his harness and surrounded by his most faithful generals
.
The embassies of Western countries such as Washington, France, Germany and the United Kingdom
have asked their nationals to leave the country
without wasting any more time, such is the advance of the war. The United Nations has also begun the evacuation of its personnel deployed in the area. In a statement, the British Government's Secretary of State for Africa, Vicky Ford, stated that the situation "is deteriorating rapidly" and "in the coming days, the clashes could approach Addis Ababa", which "could seriously limit the options "for the British to leave Ethiopian territory.
"I urge all British citizens,
whatever their circumstances, to leave immediately,
" as long as the capital's airport remains operational, the conservative policy affirmed.
Prices for outbound flights begin to rise
and international hotels are emptied of Westerners.
The war is getting closer and closer.
Even
Olympic medalists Haile Gebrselassie and Feyisa Lilesa have assured that they will join the prime minister
as soldiers in the defense of the capital.
Jeffrey Feltman, US special envoy for the Horn of Africa said yesterday that the "progress" of that country towards a diplomatic agreement between the government and the Tigray rebels may be overshadowed by the "alarming events" on the ground.
"While there is incipient progress, it runs a high risk of being overtaken by military escalation on both sides."
Despite the information silence decreed by Addis Ababa, which does not allow journalists visas,
war crimes continue to be reported
by both sides
.
