Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Maryam Hareb Al Muhairi, inaugurated yesterday the first edition of the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Security Week, which Its activities are held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC).

In her opening speech, Al Muhairi said: "The UAE has launched the National Food Security Strategy 2051, and is working to support the employment of technology and innovative solutions in the agricultural sector, and to adopt sustainable practices in food production and consumption, with the aim of strengthening its position as a leading global center for innovation-based food security by 2051. She explained that the UAE, in terms of its regional and international role, succeeded in launching the "Agricultural Climate Innovation" initiative, in partnership with the United States of America, and with the support of more than 30 countries and about 50 non-governmental organizations, during the COP26 World Conference.

She indicated that the UAE will increase its investments in climate-smart agriculture at a value of one billion dollars, out of a total of four billion dollars targeted by the initiative to create a global investment movement, pointing out that the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Security Week provides a platform to attract and attract more innovations and technical solutions to enhance our food security. And strengthening the country's position as a global center for innovation.

Al Muhairi emphasized that the UAE, thanks to the leadership's forward-looking vision, was a pioneer in developing effective strategies to enhance sustainable food production capabilities, expand the adoption of modern agricultural systems, and motivate the private sector, financing agencies and entrepreneurs to invest in modern systems.

For his part, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, Saeed Al Bahri Al Ameri, stressed that organizing the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Security Week, and hosting a group of experts, academics and executives concerned with agricultural and food sustainability issues around the world, confirms Abu Dhabi’s position as the most vibrant and dynamic city in the region, under The leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, and confirms the depth of the insightful vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, which places human well-being and quality of life at the forefront of government priorities, explaining that the week Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Security 2021 is the largest event for sustainable agriculture and food security in the region, and its activities are in line with the strategy of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to achieve global leadership in food security, and confirm its leading role in developing effective frameworks for cooperation with international partners in the field of agriculture and food.

He stressed that the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority is doing its best to sustain the agricultural sector and enhance food and vital security in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, as it works under the direct guidance and follow-up of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of the Authority's Board of Directors. To modernize farming systems, improve farm productivity, and encourage farmers and livestock breeders to adopt the application of best practices consistent with the principles of agricultural sustainability.

He pointed out that the authority pins great hopes on the outcomes of the Abu Dhabi Week for Agriculture and Food Security to foresee a better future for various sectors related to agriculture and food production, and to achieve sustainable development in the UAE and the region, through knowledge transfer, consolidation of international partnerships aimed at establishing sustainable food systems, and addressing challenges facing agriculture. .

During the opening, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Dr. Gedo Martin Lander, spoke about the importance of caring for local agricultural production, noting that the Abu Dhabi Week for Agriculture and Food Security constitutes a leading global platform to enhance cooperation in the field of agricultural innovation, and the Netherlands looks forward to developing its cooperation with the UAE in this field.

He pointed out that the challenges facing the agricultural sector can be overcome through joint action and cooperation at the regional and international levels, and the adoption of innovative sustainable solutions that contribute to the development of agricultural practices used, while preserving the environment.

He stated that the UAE-Dutch joint committee contributed to strengthening cooperation between the two countries in all fields, and the two countries looked forward to taking additional steps to strengthen their partnership, face food security challenges, and spread innovative agricultural practices.

While Sheikh Eng. Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Head of the Department of Civil Aviation in Ras Al Khaimah, President of Onehaif Company, which specializes in the production and development of honey bees, stressed that the advancement of beekeeping and honey production achieves environmental and economic goals, as bees are responsible for pollinating about 71 types of agricultural crops. That ensures that we provide two-thirds of the food we eat.

During his speech at the opening of the week, he explained that the honey production market is growing rapidly, as it is expected to grow by 4.8% to reach about $10 billion by 2026, warning of the danger of the spread of honey fraud, which negatively affects this vital and important sector for food security.

The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Security Week includes a number of events related to issues of agricultural sustainability, food and biosecurity, in addition to food safety and quality, including the Abu Dhabi Conference for Agriculture and Food Security, the Best Honey Competition Distribution Ceremony, sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, and Sheikh Salem Awards Bin Sultan Al Qasimi in the field of beekeeping and honey production.
