US police: dead and injured after car crashes into crowd celebrating Christmas

Police say there have been "several deaths" when a car rammed into a crowd gathered for a Christmas parade in Wisconsin.

Police Chief Dan Thompson told a news conference that there were "dead". Local officials also said 11 adults and 12 children were taken to hospitals when a vehicle crashed into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, on Sunday evening.

The New York Daily News reported that at about 5:30 p.m. local time police asked residents to avoid going into the downtown area, as investigators headed to the scene of the accident about 20 miles (about 32 kilometers) west of Milwaukee.

One of the videos posted on Twitter showed a red SUV speeding towards the motorcade, barely missing a little girl with her back to the street dancing to drums and music.

The Wisconsin Freeman reported that the car continued on its path, injuring seven people.

WGN television also reported that the accident also appeared to have seen shootings, and the convoy was evacuated.
