Today, an agreement was signed between Tekniska verken, LKAB and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

This through the so-called Klimatklivet, a collaborative project to change the energy system from waste incineration to waste heat that comes from flue gases in LKAB's pellet plant.

"A greener and more environmentally friendly society"

The waste heat will be enough for 70 percent of the power demand and the remaining 30 percent will come from biofuels.

- Concretely for the people of Kiruna, it means a greener and more environmentally friendly society, a historic solution for the reform of the energy system in society, says Jan Fjordell, CEO of Tekniska verken in Kiruna AB.

Costs SEK 210 million

The entire project costs SEK 210 million and is financed for the most part by LKAB but also by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency through Klimatklivet up to SEK 78 million.

This means that you must stop burning waste that today comes from Kiruna and the surrounding municipalities and Norway.

The effect is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40,000 tonnes per year.
