• Gran Angular Nicolás Maduro seeks to legitimize himself in the face of a political turnaround in the Latin American regional hornet's nest

  • Zapatero elections in Venezuela: "I want dialogue to recover after the elections"

The real opposition returned to the polls this Sunday in elections under the control of the Bolivarian revolution.

Some regional and municipal elections that suggest that

Chavismo will maintain a good part of local power in the face of the abstention

of voters who disagree with the rules of the game and annoyed by the differences within an opposition.

"We have the best electoral system in the world, easy, safe, accessible, protected and audited. From these elections comes the consolidation of the homeland and stability," Nicolás Maduro boasted in the middle of the day, when they still did not know each other no results not even participation.

The reality, beyond Maduro's wishes, is that two decades of irregular handling of the elections are not cured in a single day, far from it. The day began with

the blocking of 16 independent portals

and continued with sporadic episodes of violence, the military in charge of the Republic Plan who had difficulty remembering that they should be independent, the change of voting centers in opposition areas, the installation of the so-called "red dots. "to promote political control of the people and the abusive use of public media, which have become the best propaganda platform for the Bolivarian elite.

The most notable of the violent incidents originated in San Francisco, in the border state of Zulia, when

thugs from a van fired at a group of people

outside a polling station.

A young man died and two people were injured, while witnesses assured the local media La Verdad that they were "colectivos" (Chavista radicals).

The regional opposition deputy

Eduardo Labrador

also suffered the wrath of the paramilitaries in the same municipality, who hit him severely in the face in an attack on the opposition campaign command.

The organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) confirmed the attacks by the collectives.

How important are these elections?

The reality is that

Maduro has opened his hand because his personal power is not being played

and under pressure from the international siege he is suffering.

This electoral convocation is the product of the negotiations established in Mexico under the auspices of Norway, in which the Government intends to give up the sanctions that suffocate it so much and the opposition seeks a path to freedom.

Without sanctions, there would be no dialogue.

The new National Electoral Council (CNE), made up of three Chavista rectors and two opponents, partially limited the usual pro-government abuses, including the historic auction operation, which takes advantage of public resources to pressure and lead those who vote to vote. they hesitated to do so.

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, turned into Maduro's great international star, appeared at its facilities. The former president of the Spanish Government opted for the return to dialogue in Mexico, suspended by the "son of Chávez" as revenge for the extradition of Colombian magnate

Álex Saab

to the United States. "The US government stabbed the dialogue in the back with the kidnapping of one of its members (Saab)," Maduro said.

"I want dialogue to recover after the elections. Democracy is a continuous dialogue and these elections mark a meeting point.

There is still a long way to go, but the direction is the right one,

" said the former leader of the PSOE, who also supported with his presence and his statements the previous electoral processes: in 2017 the votes for the Constituent Assembly (in which a million false votes were introduced in the polls due to the very high abstention), in 2018 the presidential ones (not recognized by Western democracies and most of the countries of the region) and in 2020 the parliamentarians (with the abstention of the real opposition).

The former head of the Spanish Government is the main voice in defense of Maduro that today stands up in Europe.

It

has

also

become its main support for the laundering of Chavismo

within the Puebla Group, which brings together leftist, populist and revolutionary leaders of the continent.

In the political circles of Caracas, the return to Mexico of both delegations was taken for granted from the first day of Maduro's untimely departure, one of his usual maneuvers to buy time and, incidentally, demonstrate solidarity with the prisoner Saab.

It would only be necessary to set a date for its restart, even the revolutionary leader raised expectations by assuring yesterday that the results

"will strengthen the political dialogue."

Zapatero, in a petit committee with journalists, justified his closeness to Maduro with the support he gives to people from the opposition, "an endless list."

"(My mission) is to build bridges, with my convictions that have yielded results (negotiations with ETA).

I do not enter into who is more right,"

said the international observer.

"Zapatero is the maximum expression of political degradation. He

is an employee very well paid by the dictatorship

. He is a shame for Spain, for Europe and the democratic world. Venezuela must repudiate him as cynical and phony," attacked

Juan Pablo Guanipa

, vice president of the Democratic National Assembly of 2015.

The "president town", as the propaganda calls him, gave special treatment to his luxury guest, in which there was no shortage of hugs and television connections. Maduro has a group of like-minded "observers" who serve as a counterweight to European and UN observers, made up of former Colombian senator

Piedad Córdoba

, Iranian and Turkish delegations, in addition to the Spanish Zapatero,

Juan Carlos Monedero

, founder of Podemos, and

Manu Pineda, a

communist MEP, recently arrived from Havana after supporting the government of

Miguel Díaz-Canel

and meeting with

Raúl Castro

.

The president threatened on Saturday the components of the European Union observer mission with a "forceful response."

"So far the problems have been solved in one way or another, but they are things that we will address later. The news is that

the problems tend to be solved and people are voting calmly,

" said

Isabel Santos

, head of the mission. European.
