During the pandemic's first wave in Europe, in March 2020, the eyes of the whole world were on Lombardy in northern Italy.

There, people died at such a rate that they did not have time to be buried.

SVT's EU reporter Christopher Wendick went there.

Spooky empty streets met him in Milan.

When the reporter visited a hospital, he was shocked.

- I saw in real time how the virus killed people.

The reporter believes that situations and feelings he experienced were reminiscent of war.

Scenes from the hospital have etched themselves.

- Covid-19 became real to me every now and then.

Hear Christopher Wendick talk about when he was at the center of the pandemic in the video.
