“What action does the Commission propose to take to protect EU citizens, businesses and jobs from potential sanctions that are contrary to international law?”

- the document says.

In her address, the MEP noted that the EC has repeatedly opposed the introduction of restrictions on European companies conducting legitimate business, and notified Washington of this.

However, on September 23, the US House of Representatives approved an amendment to the draft defense budget for fiscal 2022, which implies new sanctions against Nord Stream 2.

At the same time, the Senate has been considering the issue of restrictions since 2015, Brownsberger-Reinhold recalled.

According to her, if both chambers support the bill, "radical US sanctions" will put an additional burden on energy markets, which are already struggling to cope with demand during the heating season.

“This is fraught with serious damage to the interests of the EU, regardless of who takes what position on Nord Stream 2,” the MP said.

She also stressed that individual households, the economy in general and employment are already suffering from the effects of high energy prices.

In November, a group of US senators proposed an amendment to sanctions against Nord Stream 2 in the defense budget bill.

The US Senate is currently considering its version of the draft.

After both chambers present their developments, the commission will agree on them into one document and send them to the Congress to vote.

Then it will be sent to the President for signature.

MEPs have repeatedly expressed concern over possible US sanctions.

Earlier, the representative of Germany, Dietmar Koster, said that they could affect the supply of Russian gas to Europe and aggravate the situation in the energy sector.
