Emergency in South Korea after Chinese and Russian fighters approached its airspace

South Korea's air force ordered fighter jets to take off quickly on Friday as soon as Russian and Chinese military aircraft approached the country's airspace without any warning.

The South Korean national news agency, "Yonhap", quoted the General Staff as saying that two Chinese and seven Russian planes flew separately and unannounced through the air control area off the east coast of the country.

However, none of the aircraft violated South Korean airspace.

Even before the planes reached the Air Defense Identification Zone, it was reported that the South Korean military sent F-15 and F-16 fighters and a military fuel plane to the area in a bid to prevent any military accident.

Chinese authorities notified the South Korean military that it was a "routine" joint flying exercise.

The Air Defense Identification Zone is a military air buffer zone that is not part of the country's territory or airspace, but the planes that cross it are naturally expected to determine their identities and send their coordination operations on a regular basis.
