November 19, 2021 Northern Europe in the grip of Covid. Yet another peak in deaths was recorded in Russia. In the last 24 hours, health authorities said, 1,254 people have lost their lives, the highest daily number since the start of the pandemic. The total deaths rose to 261,589. According to data from the crisis center, 2.83% of coronavirus patients have died in Russia. In the last 24 hours, another 37,374 infections were also detected, up compared to the 36,626 detected yesterday.

Germany, national emergency

The situation is also alarming in Germany. "It is time to act," said Angela Merkel, announcing in Berlin the squeeze on the unvaccinated and the (partial) obligation of vaccination for health professionals.

Hospitals in Bavaria have sent out a dramatic call for help, in the wake of the increase in the number of Covid-19 infections and what they think will be an overload of intensive care units. "The current situation is more dramatic than it has ever been in Bavaria during the entire pandemic," said the managing director of the Bavarian Hospital Society, Roland Engehausen, as reported by Der Spiegel.

The number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care in Bavaria is increasing by about 30% every week without harsh countermeasures, the executive warned. In Bavarian clinics even oncological operations should be postponed indefinitely due to the current situation. Transferring patients to neighboring federal states is also becoming increasingly difficult. The vast majority of ICU admissions would have been preventable through vaccinations, Engehausen said. "At this moment it is important that every single person gets vaccinated, not only out of solidarity but also because the treatments are no longer optimal, as one might have thought a few weeks ago", he added.

Austria, lockdown and mandatory vaccine from February

The virus is overwhelming other countries as well.

Slovakia will close the doors of public life to the non-immunized.

Austria has announced a generalized lockdown: it will last 20 days.

By December 13, it should finish at least for the vaccinated and recovered, Chancellor Schallenberg said.

According to the latest data in the country, the incidence has reached a thousand cases per 100 thousand inhabitants.

"We have to look ahead to reality, whoever is against the vaccine is making an attack on our health, we do not want the fifth and sixth wave, the virus does not go away, the virus remains", said the chancellor announcing the compulsory vaccination against Covid starting February 1, 2022 for people who have never received a dose.
