"The Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Treasury Department (OFAC) has sanctioned six Iranian individuals and one Iranian entity ... for attempting to influence the 2020 US presidential election," the US Treasury Department said in a statement.
It is noted that the individuals in question spread misinformation on social networks, sent threatening emails and distributed fake videos "in an attempt to undermine faith in the American elections."
In September, US President Joe Biden extended the decree on unilateral sanctions against foreign organizations and individuals for meddling in American elections for another year.
