On Thursday, the average number of covid cases in Skåne in the last 7-day period was 130. The corresponding figure a month ago was 71 cases, which means that the average number has almost doubled in four weeks.

According to Region Skåne's infection control doctor Eva Melander, the trend of increased societal spread and a certain increase in the number of hospital admissions may be due to various factors:

- The infection remains in society and we have an open and vibrant society now.

We have good vaccination coverage, but there are many unvaccinated people left in society who can become ill.

10-50-year-olds are most infected

In the last week, the statistics show that the spread of infection is increasing in all age groups except among the very oldest.

- It is still the case that most of those affected are still between 10 and 50 years old and few are infected among the very oldest.

It is a general increase we are seeing and we are seeing the increase throughout Skåne, which indicates that the infection is spreading in our society a little more now, says Eva Melander.

Not over yet

When do you think the pandemic is over?

- I wish I could answer that question.

I hope that we will soon be able to look at this disease as a seasonal cold or equivalent to what we experience with the flu, says infection control doctor Eva Melander, and continues:

- The interesting thing now is what will happen during the winter season.

How tough will we have it?

We have good vaccination coverage, we are replenishing with new doses, but how is it in relation to the spread of infection?
