An American couple traveling to Rome, Italy, broke into the Colosseum and was caught drinking beer and fined more than 1 million won. 



According to foreign media such as the BBC, an American couple in their 20s sneaked into the Colosseum at around 5:30 a.m. local time on the 15th, and was caught drinking beer from the second floor of the building while looking at the nearby ruins of the Roman Forum.



After receiving a report from a passerby, they admitted to the trespassing and accepted a fine of 800 euros (about 1,070,000 won).



The American couple reportedly told local police they wanted to "experience the thrill of drinking beer inside a World Heritage Site". 



The Colosseum is currently only open to tourists from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
