November 16, 2021 The Covid-19 pandemic continues to claim victims around the world and in the current phase Europe is once again its main outbreak.

In the ranking of the eleven nations in which the greatest number of infections were recorded in the last month in absolute terms, only the

United States, India and Brazil,

which however have an immensely higher number of inhabitants than the countries of the old continent, do not belong to this .

Leading the rise of infections in Europe is

Great Britain,

where in the last 28 days a million and 110 thousand positivity have been intercepted but where thanks to the very high vaccination coverage in the same period of time there has been a number of deaths, 4,342, certainly dramatic but which, without the introduction of the immunizing serum, it would have been much heavier. To realize this, just think of the situation in

Russia,

which in the same period registered 1.05 million infections but, thanks to the lack of adherence both to the vaccination campaign and to the health safety measures by the population, also 31,473 victims.

In

France

for elementary school pupils the obligation to wear the anti-Covid-19 mask returns. Effective from today, the measure was taken with the aim of stemming the increase in coronavirus infection. Until now, pupils across the country had to wear respiratory protective devices in 61 departments.

The

Germany

sets a negative record, yet another, in the fight against Covid-19. According to the latest data released this morning by the 'Robert Koch Institut', in the last week the report of new cases per 100 thousand people marks 303, for the first time above 300 since the beginning of the pandemic. Moreover, after just one week, the number exceeds the previous record which had stood above 200. Germany, 80 million inhabitants, has only 67.5% of the population vaccinated with two doses, while since last Saturday, after just one month, the population can again access the tests for free. Meanwhile, precisely in an attempt to stem the coronavirus race, the Berlin government would be willing to reintroduce restrictive measures.Among these, a return to smart working seems increasingly imminent.

And it's no better in

Ukraine,

with 613 thousand infections in less than a month and 17,151 deaths. In an attempt to dispose of the unprecedented number of bodies, the Kiev funeral homes were forced to double their cremations compared to the summer months. The news comes as the government announces a decree to offer a cash incentive to those who decide to get vaccinated, as announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky: in the nation he leads less than a third of the population has been fully vaccinated. More generally, it is Eastern and Northern Europe that is experiencing the return of the virus at this stage. This is a situation that the ECDC, the European Center for Disease Control, in its latest risk assessment which examined the data available up to 12 November, described it as "very worrying", "characterized by a rapid and significant increase in cases "in most countries of the Union.

In addition to the countries already mentioned, the circulation of the coronavirus is particularly active in

Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Slovakia

and the

Czech Republic

, which register between 1,000 and 1,500 infections per million inhabitants per day. ICU admissions and mortality are also increasing alarmingly. The

Bulgaria

, where only 20% of the population has received two injections of the vaccine, has a record of 24 deaths per million inhabitants per day, while

Romania

(30% vaccinated) mourns 17 million every day.

"The peak of contamination seems to have been reached in Bulgaria and Romania, which could soon lead to a clearing of this leaden picture", hopes Professor Antoine Flahault, one of the authors of the report presented in Geneva. This new wave is now reaching the northern countries. While remaining at lower levels than in the East, the number of cases per million population is now skyrocketing in

Denmark

(500 per day),

Belgium

(860),

Netherlands

(785),

Ireland

(830) and

Germany

(450 ).

In particular, pressure on Dutch hospitals has now almost brought the health system to a breaking point. "The worst is yet to come," the head of the country's hospital association said yesterday as the number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals rose to around 2,000, including nearly 400 in intensive care, reaching its highest level since May. Further south, Italy, Spain and France are seeing a much slower rise in cases. In the Mediterranean basin, only Greece stands out with 650 cases per million inhabitants per day and high mortality. Out of less than 11 million inhabitants, almost the same infections have been recorded in the Hellenic country as in Italy (141 thousand the first, 145 thousand our country) and 1,420 deaths against the 1,234 registered in the boot, which has almost 60 million inhabitants.

The situation in

Japan

 is less worrying, but stationary.

The Ministry of Health, in its most recent bulletin updated yesterday, confirmed 79 new cases of coronavirus across the country and one death, while the number of hospitalized patients in serious condition stands at 85. In Tokyo, the metropolitan government of the capital reported 7 new cases, the lowest number in 2021.
