United Kingdom Three arrested for terrorism after the explosion of a car in Liverpool
The "premier"
Boris Johnson
has summoned a Cobra emergency cabinet after the "terrorist incident" that occurred in Liverpool on Sunday, when the explosion of a taxi caused the death of a passenger and left the driver badly injured at the entrance of the Hospital of the Women.
Four suspects have been arrested for their alleged relationship with what at first seemed a simple accident.
The testimony of the injured taxi driver, David Perry, hailed as a
national hero for having prevented a greater tragedy,
nonetheless set off alarms.
Both the Northwest Police counterterrorism unit and MI5 took action on the matter, declaring the explosion a
"terrorist incident"
early Monday
.
According to
The Daily Mail
, the passenger (whose identity has not yet been disclosed) could have targeted the nearby Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, where more than a thousand military personnel and local authorities celebrated
Armistice Day
at that time
.
The explosion occurred shortly before eleven in the morning, when the security perimeter was closed for the official ceremony.
The passenger took the taxi on Rutland Avenue, ten minutes from Liverpool Maternity, where he apparently planned to get off.
The driver managed to escape from the vehicle at the time the explosion occurred.
B
oris Johnson praised the
"incredible courage" of the driver,
while the mayor of Liverpool Joanne Anderson said his "heroic efforts" had served to avoid "a terrible disaster in the hospital."
"The motivation behind this incident is unclear," said Deputy Commissioner Russ Jackson of the Northwest Counterterrorism Unit.
"Our investigations indicate the existence of an
improvised explosive
constructed by the taxi passenger."
"The reason he chose Liverpool maternity is unknown, as is the reason for the rapid explosion," Jackson alleged.
"We are aware that Armistice Day was being celebrated a short distance away and that the explosion occurred shortly before eleven o'clock in the morning, when the acts began."
Three young men aged 21, 26 and 29 were arrested a few hours later for their alleged relationship to the events.
The taxi driver's statement prompted police to conduct several house searches and arrest a fourth 20-year-old suspect on Monday morning.
The news, dubbed by the tabloids as "the Poppy Day bomb", has again triggered the fear of terrorist attacks in the United Kingdom, just a month after the knife-point murder of Conservative MP David Amess, at the hands of of a young man of Sudanese origin, Ali Harbi Ali, in the town of Leigh on Sea.
