Biden signs $1 trillion infrastructure bill

US President Joe Biden signed the $1 trillion infrastructure bill at a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House.

The event was attended by Democratic and Republican lawmakers who have pushed forward the legislation in the deeply divided US Congress.

The law aims to create jobs across the country by spending billions of dollars to state and municipal governments to repair dilapidated bridges and roads, and by supporting millions of Americans' access to broadband Internet services.

The signing of the law was a rare moment when members of both parties came together to celebrate a common achievement.

Biden, whose approval ratings have fallen over his handling of issues including the economy, said passage of the law shows that despite doubts, Democrats and Republicans can come together and deliver results.

The White House said Biden signed an executive order prior to the law's signing ceremony that included directives to prioritize materials made in the United States for infrastructure projects.

The executive order also created a task force of senior Cabinet officials to oversee implementation of the legislation.
