The two bombings near the city of Baghouz were carried out during the final offensive against the terrorist group IS in the region, and the air raids were ordered by US special forces.

The US Central Command for the region officially confirms the incident for the first time on March 18, 2019. The military command claims that the operation was justified.

In a statement, the military leadership writes that 80 people were killed in the attacks, of which 16 belonged to IS.

The military says that it is not clear whether the other more than 60 killed were part of the militant part of the terrorist movement.

The US military operation was carried out during the alliance Syria's Democratic Forces (SDF) offensive to defeat IS in the region.

Alarm about war crimes ignored

Immediately after the incident, the US military's internal investigation began an investigation.

But mentions of the bombings have been deleted in the report, writes The New York Times, which refers to the availability of secret documents and interviews with inmates.

A lawyer who was present at the operational headquarters for the attack is said to have alerted the Ministry of Defense that the attacks may have been war crimes, but no action was taken either in the Ministry of Defense or in the Senate Defense Committee.
