Iranians flee their homes after two earthquakes

Iranian television said two strong earthquakes struck the south of the country near the port of Bandar Abbas on Sunday, prompting residents to flee their homes and killing at least one person.

Iranian television added that two earthquakes of 6.3 and 6.4 degrees shook Hormozgan province.

And the television quoted local officials as saying: "One person died after an electricity pole fell on him."

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center said a 6.5-magnitude earthquake rocked the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan, at a depth of 10 km.

"The earthquake was felt in several cities in southern Iran in the province of Hormozgan," a local official told state television, adding that rescue teams had been sent to the area.

Iranian state television showed footage of residents in Bandar Abbas fleeing their homes in panic.
