Bahrain authorizes the use of Avshield, an anti-coronavirus drug

The National Health Regulatory Authority in the Kingdom of Bahrain approved today the emergency use of Avushild drug, in order to prevent corona virus (Covid-19), as the first country in the world to legalize the drug, for adults aged 18 years and over, who suffer from immunodeficiency or who are taking Immunosuppressants, as well as individuals with occupations that put them at risk of transmission.

The decision comes based on the review and evaluation of the data provided by the manufacturer, "AstraZeneca", which was implemented by the Pharmaceutical Products Regulatory Division of the authority.

It is reported that Avushild drug is made from a mixture of two antibodies, which achieved a “statistically significant decrease in cases of acute or fatal coronavirus (Covid-19) infection” in patients who were not hospitalized and those with symptoms ranging from mild to Medium.

More than 5,000 people participated in the clinical trials called PROVENT, where the mixture was proven to be 77% effective against Coronavirus (Covid-19), while there were no reports of any severe symptoms within the treated group.

The safety data also showed that, in general, the incidence of severe symptoms was well-balanced in those who received a placebo.
