November 14, 2021 Unlucky debut for Matteo Berrettini in the ATP Finals in Turin, the tournament that closes the season and which sees the best eight players in the world as protagonists.

At the beginning of the second set of the match against Alexander Zverev, the blue called for the intervention of the doctor and painstakingly held back the tears.

The Italian tennis player felt a twinge in the abdominal area, the challenge was first temporarily interrupted, then ended.

The 25-year-old from Rome, number 7 in the international ranking, on the fast indoor Pala Alpitour, fought evenly against the 24-year-old German, number 3 in the world rankings, before giving up on the score of 7-6 (7) 1-0 in favor of the 'opponent. In the first set Berrettini failed two set points during the twelfth game, on the opponent's serve. Lost the first fraction at the tie-break, the Roman called the "medical time out" on 1-0 for Zverev, 40 all, in the second set: he accused abdominal muscle problems. At the wheel the Italian played a point, missing a forehand not from him, and immediately afterwards he raised the white flag.

Tomorrow it will be evaluated whether Berrettini will withdraw from the tournament.

The South Tyrolean Jannik Sinner, who was the first reserve of these Finals, would take the place of Berrettini in the remaining two games of the group (against Hurkacz and Medvedev).

Previously, the Russian Daniil Medvedev had won the first match of the red group at Pala Alpitour.
