In 2014, Gällivare municipality and the state mining company LKAB signed an agreement on the demolition of the urban area Malmberget.

In order for the mining company to be able to continue mining iron ore in the Vitåfors mine, the more than 4,500 residents in the urban area needed to move.

In the agreement, the parties agreed, among other things, on compensation for the municipal properties that were in the urban area, the sum landed at SEK 2.6 billion.

The transformation of society, as the process is called, has now been going on for a couple of years and now the municipality's auditors are raising a warning finger that the costs have taken off.

SEK 720 million for continued construction

Over the next three years, Gällivare municipality has set aside 720 million to replace some of the municipal buildings that disappear when Malmberget is demolished.

What remains to be replaced is a primary school, a multi-sports arena, a nursing home and a bathhouse.

Of the 720 million, SEK 235 million is money that the municipality did not receive from LKAB as part of the social transformation.

Exceeded budget with what the home care service costs

The SEK 235 million corresponds to one third of the total investment over the next three years.

The reason why the municipal board has chosen to break out the millions is based on the municipality exceeding its budget.

If you add up the municipality's own loans with the money set aside from LKAB, the investment budget is exceeded by 4.3 percent, which corresponds to just over SEK 126 million.

This is approximately as much money as Gällivare municipality has set aside in its budget for 2021 to provide home care services - SEK 127 million.

Project on Repisvaara put on ice

Just over ten months ago, the municipality announced that it would carry out a redevelopment of a planned F-6 school and special housing for the elderly that would be built in the new district of Repisvaara.

In addition, the municipality has also postponed plans for the construction of a new outdoor pool.

The municipality has not yet communicated whether it will go from plan to action and begin construction on Repisvaara.
