Having access to the sea is nice.

And above all, it is very practical.

This is why the exclusive economic zones (EEZs) - the maritime areas over which the coastal states exercise their rights - represent a highly strategic issue for the great powers.

Because that makes room for it: an EEZ represents a strip of approximately 370 km off the coast of the country concerned.

And if the shore of another country is within these 370 km, the border is drawn in the middle.

And in this game of the largest maritime domain, who is the strongest?

As often, it is the United States, with an EEZ estimated at 11.3 million km ².

In the leading group - illustrated by this infographic from our partner Statista - we find other large coastal countries: Australia and Russia.

But beyond having an immense land territory, the interest is above all to have multiple territories (to multiply the EEZs around).

This explains the importance of France (2nd) and the United Kingdom (5th).
