• For the city of Marseille, the tramway to the Belle de Mai and the Merlan theater is a priority, more than the one to the Place du 4-Septembre and the sea.

  • It asks the metropolis to reverse the schedule, and to initiate as quickly as possible this site valued at 250 million euros, which was not to take place before 2030.

The city of Marseille clearly set out its priorities for the tramway on Tuesday, during a press conference which shortly followed the vote by the National Assembly of 32 million euros in appropriations for Marseille transport in 2022. “Les public transport must develop in the north of the city, and in the most precarious neighborhoods, those whose populations are most dependent on this mode of mobility, ”says Audrey Gatian, deputy mayor in charge of mobility.

Concretely, this means for the city to launch as soon as possible the extension of line T3 towards Castellane and even beyond, but also the tramway project towards the Belle de Mai and the Merlan theater, which was planned by the metropolis, but not before 2030. "Late buses, crowded buses, it's a daily reality to go shopping, to work," laments the mayor of the 2nd and 3rd arrondissements, Anthony Krehmeier.

“Sending a tram to the sea, I don't think that's important,” he adds, referring to the extension of T3 to the Place du 4-Septembre, near the Corniche, planned for 2026.

120,000 inhabitants served

“This project is not a priority for us,” confirms Audrey Gatian. It would be interesting to reverse the schedule. The tram to the Belle de Mai represents 120,000 people served. The cost is estimated at 250 million euros, for a 4.7 km route. "We must not wait until 2030, we have additional funding from the State, we must accelerate", she adds, recalling that the city of Marseille is "in a logic of catching up", when "Montpellier is building its fifth tram line and Toulouse its third metro line ”. "It is also an objective to sew up the city, to stop this isolation of certain districts from the rest of the city," says Audrey Gatian.

Still, transport falls under the jurisdiction of the metropolis.

Questioned before the press conference, Catherine Pila, president of the RTM and leader of the LR opposition to the city council, thus denounced a "coup de com" "" of the city.

“The town hall must not grant itself the motherhood of projects and successes that are not theirs.

»To listen to him, the providential manna of the State is the result of the only« tenacity of Martine Vassal ».

When Anthony Krehmeier, of the municipal majority, objects that "the State accepts to help finance transport on condition of opening up the northern districts".

“Yes, it makes sense to build a Belle de Mai tram”

“Opening up the northern districts is a priority, everyone recognizes that the network of the territory is not up to the task, however delays Catherine Pila.

We are aware that the Belle de Mai is a district which is not served on its own site.

Yes, it makes sense to build a Belle de Mai tram, it's on our 2030 agenda. ”Why not before?

“There are studies already done, projects already underway, such as the automation of the metro,” she says.

"It's a little complicated to do against the will of a municipality and against the will of the State, I think the metropolis will also hear it", wants to believe Audrey Gatian.

For its part, the metropolis hardly relishes the exercise of commenting on a conference to which it has not been invited.

And confirms that a working meeting on the tram did indeed take place the same morning.

From there to draw conclusions, it is still too early.
