November 10, 2021 In September 2021, the seasonally adjusted index of industrial production is estimated to increase by 0.1% compared to August. On average in the third quarter, the level of production grew by 1.0% compared to the previous quarter. Istat communicates it.

The seasonally adjusted monthly index, reads the Istat note, shows a sustained economic increase for consumer goods (+ 3.3%) and more contained growth for energy (+ 1.3%) and intermediate goods (+ 0.9%); vice versa, a decrease was observed for capital goods (-1.0%). On the other hand, there are marked trend increases for intermediate goods (+ 7.1%), capital goods (+ 4.9%) and consumer goods (+ 4.5%); On the other hand, the energy sector decreased (-4.2%).

The sectors of economic activity that recorded the greatest trend increases are the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+ 13.3%), the manufacture of machinery (+ 11.4%) and metallurgy and the manufacture of metal products ( + 9.6%). Trend downturns are recorded in the manufacturing of means of transport (-11.7%), in mining activities (-6.3%), in the supply of electricity, gas, steam and water (-5.0%) and in manufacturing of computers and electronics products (-0.3%).

The production of metallurgy marks an increase of 23.5% while the production of electrical equipment marks a growth of 26.8%. There was a + 21.5% for means of transport while the production of pharmaceutical products decreased with a -1.9% compared to the first 9 months of 2020.

"Unsatisfactory numbers"

The Istat data on industrial production are "unsatisfactory. We expected a greater rise, even if we cannot speak of negative data since we remain in positive territory compared to the pre-pandemic values": said Massimiliano Dona, president of the National Union Consumers. "According to our study, in fact, in September the production not only, as reported by Istat, is higher by 1.5% compared to February 2020, the last pre-lockdown month, a goal achieved very often in the previous months, but for the third time, the level remains higher even in comparison with January 2020, the last pre-pandemic month, even if by an imperceptible + 0.1% (however, consumer goods are struggling, marking a -2.2%).Of course, satisfaction is minimal if we consider that production is still lower, going back both by two years, -0.5% on September 2019, and by three, -2.4% on September 2018 ", concludes Dona.

"Growth slows down"

The Istat data on industrial production for September "mark a slowdown in the growth of the sector, confirmed by the quarterly trend which, according to the statistical institute, in the third quarter of the year recorded a lower growth than in the previous quarters ". The Codacons affirms it. "The Italian industry will have to deal with the bill alarm triggered in October, and with the crisis in raw materials and fuels that is leading to increases in price lists in all sectors - explains the president Carlo Rienzi - Our fear is that in the coming months the industrial sector may face a sharp slowdown, also due to lower consumption by households who, in the face of sustained growth in retail prices, they will cut spending ".
