China News Service, Paris, November 9th (Reporter Li Yang) The 41st UNESCO General Conference opened on the 9th local time at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France.

Audrey Azoulay was re-elected as Director-General of UNESCO in the plenary election on the same day.

The UNESCO Executive Board decided in October to nominate Azoulay for re-election as Director-General.

Azoulay’s nomination received overwhelming support from UNESCO member states, winning 155 votes out of 169 votes in the election that day.

After the election results were announced, Azoulay delivered a speech at the plenary meeting, stating that she regarded the election results as another demonstration of UNESCO’s internal unity.

Azoulay said that in the past four years, we have allowed UNESCO to regain public trust and at the same time restored UNESCO’s confidence in itself in many ways.

By easing tensions, seeking consensus on controversial issues, and restoring the tradition of large-scale operations on the ground, we have found a common goal again.

Azoulay was born in France in 1972 and was the French Minister of Culture. She was elected Director-General of UNESCO at the 39th UNESCO General Conference in November 2017 for a term of four years.

Azoulay will start a new four-year term at an official ceremony held on the 22nd of this month.

During this conference, a series of meetings and activities on education, culture, and social development will be held.

UNESCO will release the "Future of Education" report during the conference; UNESCO will also co-organize a global education conference with the French government.

Founded in 1946, UNESCO aims to promote cooperation among nations through education, science and culture, and contribute to world peace and security.

UNESCO’s 75th anniversary commemorative event was postponed to the current session of the General Assembly due to the new crown epidemic.

The General Assembly is the highest leading body of UNESCO. It determines UNESCO’s policies and main work routes, and is responsible for important tasks such as budget formulation.

The conference is generally held every two years, and this conference will last until the 24th of this month.
