The shamelessness with which Lukashenko uses migrants to increase the pressure on the EU at the Polish border shows above all that it has still not sent enough signals of determination to the beleaguered dictator in Minsk.

He apparently hopes that he can somehow get rid of the European sanctions with his smuggling policy.

A bit of desperation shimmers through, however, because Lukashenko cannot be sure of his ally in Moscow.

Putin supports him only half-heartedly and even humiliates him regularly.

First of all, the EU should do everything it can to put an end to this inhuman game.

There are still political and economic levers, above all more should be done against the flights with which migrants come to Belarus.

In contrast to other escape routes, this one was created for purely political reasons.

Nevertheless, this case shows again that the EU must finally hold a fundamental debate on asylum and migration policy.

Erdogan once tried to blackmail Europe with asylum seekers as blatantly as Lukashenko.

This is only possible because the EU itself cannot find a common solution for dealing with migratory movements, and has unfortunately been doing so for many years.
