The German rescue ship Sea-Eye 4 has rescued 800 migrants in the Mediterranean in recent days, 400 of them were rescued from a wooden boat already on Thursday.

The ship then steered towards Lampedusa, Italy but there it stopped.

“In just 48 hours, our team rescued over 800 people.

Among the survivors are children, pregnant women and the injured.

For everyone, the exceptional situation must end immediately, "they wrote on Twitter on Friday.

Urges EU countries to act urgently

But late on Saturday, the ship received positive news.

"After many difficult hours of waiting, we finally received good news from Rome," writes the rescue team and now has to change the jar against Trapani, Sicily to add.

But at the same time, they urge EU countries to act urgently and coordinate emergency situations, "regardless of skin color or the origin of those in need."

The Norwegian ship Ocean Viking, with over 300 migrants on board, has also searched for a port in Italy to dock at, but has not received a permit.

On Saturday, however, six people were evacuated by the Coast Guard.

Two of the evacuees suffered severe burns and were judged to be in a serious medical condition.

"308 survivors are now being cared for on board while we wait to be added to a safe place," the rescue team wrote.

Criticism: Malta ignores cries of distress

Both Sea-Eye 4 and Ocean Viking claim in a statement that Malta's rescue station, which is to coordinate the emergency situations in the Mediterranean, did not respond to any of their calls for assistance.

"It is shameful how Malta is repeatedly shirking its responsibilities and ignoring emergency calls," Sea-Eyes chairman Gorden Isler said in a statement.

Italy's Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese has repeatedly pointed out to other EU countries that migrants leaving North Africa across the Mediterranean are the responsibility of all countries.

"These people must be saved, but it is extremely unfair that only Italy should receive only because it is the first country in Europe," she writes to Infomigrants.
