• Ten men were tried for beating a police officer who was returning home the night of June 14, 2020.

  • They appeared for aggravated violence in meetings, with weapons, on deposit of public authority.

  • Sentences of 42 months in prison were requested, two suspects were released.

Sentences of two and a half years in prison were requested Friday, November 5 against eight of the 10 defendants suspected of having participated in the violent assault suffered by a police officer, on the night of June 14, 2020, in Lyon.

Hit with punches and kicks, the police officer, then stationed at the Caluire police station and returning to his home, suffered 45 days of total incapacity for work (ITT), suffering from a triple fracture in his ankle.

Two minors at the origin of the attack, who would have rounded up a group in a square, are referred to the juvenile court.

The ten adults, now aged 20 to 30, have been in pre-trial detention, from two months to one year.

Treaty of "dirty cop"

The defendants were tried for violence aggravated by three circumstances: in assembly, with weapon, and on deposit of public authority.

For two of them, release was required.

For the other eight, sentences of 42 months in prison, 12 of which were suspended, with warrants of committal, were requested.

The facts took place around 4 am, while the police officer was returning from a rack with his companion.

A car pounded in front of him after a turn with the handbrake.

The driver got out and rushed at him, calling him a "dirty cop" straight away, according to his account.

No defendant admitted having knocked

The car left, and a dozen people returned.

The policeman went to meet them, to allow his companion to take shelter.

He fell under the first blows, putting himself in a fetal position, receiving around 40 blows, according to his statements.

Alerted by cries, witnesses saw from their window a group using iron bars.

At the hearing, no major defendant admitted to having struck blows, and all affirmed to ignore the quality of police officer of the victim.

“I heard noise and saw people running,” said one protagonist.

“He put a finger in my eye, I didn't see what happened,” said another.

"No one struck, no one knew he was a police officer, everyone admits that he was there, and no one hit," said prosecutor Sophie Taupin ironically.
