When the water went and Izabela went to the hospital in the town of Pszczyna in southern Poland, the doctors said they could not do anything.

They had to wait until the unborn baby's heart stopped beating.

- Due to the abortion law, doctors can do nothing.

They are waiting for the fetus to die or for something to start.

Otherwise I can get blood poisoning, mother Barbara reads from a text message that Izabela sent from the hospital.

After the doctors determined that the heart sounds had stopped, the fetus was to be removed by caesarean section, but Izabela got blood poisoning and died on the way to the operating room.

Izabela was pregnant in week 22. The fetus she was carrying was badly injured and weighed almost 500 grams.

"Gynecologists are afraid"

It is now a year since Poland introduced an almost total ban on abortion.

Even if the fetus is unable to live, it must not be removed.

The harsh restriction of abortions led to widespread protests around Poland.

- It is a tragedy for the woman's family but also for all of us gynecologists.

We gynecologists are afraid of how the changes in the legislation will be implemented.

We are afraid that the police will knock on our doors and say that we are murderers, says Maciej Socha, gynecologist.

Thirty-year-old Izabela is now seen as the abortion ban's first victim.

The incident occurred as early as September, but the details of her death have only now emerged and led to an intense debate and new protests.

Doctors shut down

The ruling Law and Justice Party denies that Izbaela died as a result of the new abortion rules, but blames doctors for wrongdoing.

Today, two of the doctors who were on duty at the hospitals were closed when Izablea died from her jobs.

Will we see more cases like Izabela?

- Absolutely, even if few percent and small risk, so as time goes on and many patients, we will see real deaths in this situation, Socha says.
