Last week, the Östergötland Region alerted that the RS virus is increasing sharply among infants.

The majority of the children who are cared for in the pediatric emergency room in Östergötland are still infants with shortness of breath.

- We have the departments full.

The situation is so serious that we are now cutting back on other care to cope with the influx, says Catrin Furuhjelm, chief physician and operations manager at HRH Crown Princess Victoria's Children's and Adolescents' Hospital in Linköping.

Child surgery is postponed

The work situation for the staff at the pediatric emergency department is strained and the department has had to borrow staff from various units at the hospital.

In order to get rid of more pediatric nurses who can work with the acutely ill children with shortness of breath, several planned pediatric operations and control visits will be postponed.

- We are currently discussing to what extent and I can not give any details about which operations are involved.

But it will happen, says Catrin Furuhjelm.
