The Per Geijer ore that LKAB is in the process of mapping is close to both the city of Kiruna and the brand new route of road E10.

Above all, it is located deep below a sensitive area for reindeer husbandry.

Gabna Sami village has an important migration route above the ore and the Sami village already feels pressured by various developments.

Should not affect the ground surface

LKAB is now investigating how the Per Geijer ore can be extracted without affecting the soil on the surface.

- We believe that this is the only solution for us to be able to coexist, reindeer husbandry and mining, says Pierre Heeroma, head of exploration at LKAB.

Fills the cavities with waste rock

A mining method is called clogging and involves filling the cavity that arises when the ore has been extracted with waste rock.

And LKAB has plenty of gray mountains in its tips after 130 years of operation in Kiruna.

However, it is a method used for smaller ore bodies and it is untested how it would work on a large scale.

Pierre Heeroma says, however, that they have not come to a conclusion as to which mining method to use and what the design in the mine could look like, this is something that LKAB's engineers work on best.

In the video, he talks about the thoughts around the invisible mine.
