Germany

is experiencing a fourth wave of coronavirus with record numbers. For the second day in a row, the Robert Koch Institute has reported this Friday

the highest number of infections

since the pandemic broke out, a rebound that has triggered all alarms.

To the 33,949 new infections with coronavirus registered on Wednesday, 37,120 cases have been added in the last 24 hours. The incidence in seven days thus stands at 169.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Deaths have risen from 124 on Wednesday to 154. The highest number of infections so far was 33,777, on December 18, 2020.

For the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) the situation is "extremely worrying".

It jeopardizes all the efforts made and

the hospitals are once again at the edge of their capacity

.

The number of coronavirus patients admitted to hospitals per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days is 4.1.

According to RKI data, only a third of those hospitalized with coronavirus had received the full schedule and that is the origin of the problem Germany faces when winter has not yet begun, that of a vaccination campaign in which it has only participated 66.9% of the population mistrust vaccines or, as the deniers affirm, believe that Covid-19 is an invention.

In its weekly report, the RKI raised the health risk of the unvaccinated or those who do not meet the full guideline from "high" to "very high."

For those vaccinated with the full schedule, the RKI considers the risk to be "moderate", although "increasing" due to the increase in the numbers of infections.

The rebound in the pandemic in Germany, as in other central and eastern European countries, will mean the return of restrictions.

The health ministers of the federal states have been evaluating since yesterday in what has been their first

face-to-face

conference

since the pandemic how to face this fourth wave.

The results of these deliberations will be announced throughout the day.

All eyes are on vaccination, which being voluntary, it is not ruled out that the ministers impose it on

a mandatory basis to certain professional sectors

, including personnel who work in nursing homes and hospitals.

While new incentives for vaccination are being sought through restrictions on the unvaccinated, health authorities are redoubling their calls for those vaccinated over 60 years of age and vulnerable groups to come to their medical centers for a booster dose.

So far, 2.4 million citizens have done so.
